Appointment of Fr Richard Umbers as an Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney

Pope Francis has appointed two new Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese of Sydney: Monsignor Anthony Randazzo and Fr Richard Umbers, priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei.

New Zealand-born Fr Umbers was ordained a priest by Bishop Javier Echevarría, Prelate of Opus Dei, on 1 September 2002 at the Marian shrine of Torreciudad, Spain. Prior to studying for the priesthood, Fr Umbers worked as an economist. He holds a Bachelor of Economics, a Master of Management Studies, a Bachelor of Theology and a PhD in Philosophy.

Fr Umbers has been based in Sydney since 2003. He has been chaplain of several educational initiatives including Warrane College and Creston College, residential colleges affiliated with The University of New South Wales, and Redfield College, a school of the PARED Foundation.

The Episcopal ordination of Monsignor Anthony Randazzo and Fr Richard Umbers will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney on Wednesday 24 August 2016.
