Sometimes reading a text slowly, really reading it, takes more than just time. It takes attention, curiosity, questions. It helps to have a friend reading with you; someone who’s already been struck by certain phrases, who’s underlined keywords and written notes and questions in the margins, who helps you understand what the text has to do with you.

That’s the idea behind this “annotated homily.” It’s like checking out a well-worn book from the library and finding someone else’s comments, questions, and prayers alongside the text — not to distract you, but to invite you to engage more deeply. To rediscover. To respond. To stay with the words until they start staying with you.

We hope this version of “Christ’s Presence in Christians,” a homily by Saint Josemaría Escrivá for Easter in 1967, will help you do just that.
