First feast day for a new saint

June 26, 2003 will be the first celebration of the feast day of St. Josemaría, Opus Dei’s founder.

Parishes all around the world will be celebrating the first feast day of St. Josemaría this June 26. “The feast of St. Josemaría reminds us that God calls all of us to live holy lives,” said Father Thomas G. Bohlin, the U.S. Vicar of Opus Dei. “St. Josemaría constantly taught that we can find God not just in church, but in our work, social and family activities.”

In the United States, special Masses will be celebrated by Cardinal Edward Egan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, Cardinal William Keeler at the National Shrine in Washington, Archbishop Charles Chaput in Denver, Archbishop Justin Rigali in St. Louis, Bishop Joseph Perry in Chicago, Bishop Joseph Galante in Dallas, Bishop Joseph Fiorenza in Houston, Bishop William Winter in Pittsburgh, and Bishop Ignatius Wang in San Francisco. Special Masses will occur in many other cities as well.

Television specials

The cable television channel EWTN has chosen St. Josemaría Escrivá and Opus Dei as a programming theme for the week of June 23 to 27. EWTN will broadcast the following programs (all times are Eastern U.S. time zone):

The Second Vatican Council taught that all the baptized are called to follow Jesus Christ, by living according to the Gospel and making it known to others. The aim of Opus Dei is to contribute to that evangelizing mission of the Church. Opus Dei encourages Christians of all social classes to live consistently with their faith, in the middle of the ordinary circumstances of their lives, especially through the sanctification of their work.

This program highlights works inspired by the teachings of St. Josemaría to spread the Social Gospel of the Church all over the world. St. Josemaría explained that Christians working in the world should not live “a kind of double life. …There is just one life, made of flesh and spirit. And it is this life which has to become, in both soul and body, holy and filled with God.”

A biographical film on the life of the founder of Opus Dei, Josemaría Escrivá, whom Pope John Paul II calls "a great figure of modern church history." This documentary follows the growth of this Catholic institution from its beginnings in 1928 to its expansion throughout the world.
