Reading the Bible with the Saints

Words from Bishop Javier Echevarría's intervention in the Synod of Bishops on the Word of God

In the saints, the encounter with the Word of God through the reading of Sacred Scripture has radically changed their life. All of us, both priests and laity, need to foster a deep hunger to know Jesus Christ, living each of the Gospel scenes as though another person present there…We who are shepherds should frequently recommend in the sacrament of Confession that the faithful read the Gospels, teaching them to enter into the narrative and inviting the penitents to offer this same advice to their friends, colleagues and family members….All of us Christians need to strive, as did the saints, to bring these texts into our daily life, in order to transform it….It would to good to foster initiatives that lead the faithful to an attitude of prayer and interior recollection towards the Gospels so that these truly influence our daily life. I also think it’s important to put care into doing the readings at Mass very well, with the certitude that God is speaking to them and to the entire community.
