CEBU CITY — A saint known for finding holiness in ordinary life has found a new home in Cebu.
The National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue welcomed an image and ex sanguine (blood) relic of St. Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei, on August 15, 2026—the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
For parishioners and volunteers who had known the saint through his writings, the occasion was deeply personal. The arrival of the relic was more than a formal ceremony; for many, it felt like welcoming a spiritual friend.
Lanie, a lector and choir member, first encountered St. Josemaría during her college years.
“I got to know St Josemaria when I was still in college and I’ve been touched by his teachings in a special way,” she said.
When she learned that his relic would be enshrined in her parish, she said, “my heart was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.” Her first reaction was to tell her family and friends.
A saint who understood ordinary life
St. Josemaría spent much of his priestly ministry proclaiming a simple but powerful message: ordinary life can be a path to holiness. He taught that work, family, study and service are not distractions from Christian life but precisely the places where Christians can meet God.
A parent caring for a child, a student preparing for an examination, a worker doing a routine job and a volunteer serving in the parish can all encounter God through their daily responsibilities. When these ordinary activities are done with love and offered to God, they can take on extraordinary meaning.
It is a message that fits naturally into Filipino life, where family, work and community are woven closely together.
A fitting home
The National Shrine of St. Joseph in Cebu is an especially fitting place for St. Josemaría’s relic.
The founder of Opus Dei had a deep devotion to St. Joseph, whom he presented as a father and lord and as a model of faith, interior life and sanctified work.
Joseph’s life was largely hidden from public view. He worked, cared for his family and fulfilled his responsibilities faithfully. For St. Josemaría, that was precisely the point: holiness does not require a spectacular life but requires love in the life we have.
From a request to Rome
The relic’s arrival was connected with the National Shrine’s silver jubilee. As part of the 25th-anniversary celebration, the pastoral team sought to welcome relics of saints with a special devotion to St. Joseph.
Rev. Fr. Ian Fel L. Balankig, Vice-President for the Visayas of the Association of Catholic Shrines and Pilgrimages (ACSP) of the Philippines, contacted the Prelate of Opus Dei in Rome to request a relic of St. Josemaría.
Months of planning eventually culminated in the August 15 celebration. For the shrine community, the relic was both a jubilee gift and an invitation to deepen their faith.
“We must always give it our best”
Gerard, a sacristan and devotee of St. Josemaría, found the saint’s message reflected in the care given to the enshrinement Mass.
“I remembered the lesson that St Josemaria has constantly shared to us,” he said, “that no matter how ordinary our lives are, we must always give it our best as a fitting gift that we can offer to God everyday.”
For him, the celebration illustrated the lesson itself because the small details, the work behind the scenes and the manner in which everything was done all mattered when they were offered with love.
That is the distinctive challenge St. Josemaría gave to ordinary Christians: do ordinary things well, and do them with love.
“Overjoyed”
Vivien, a parish volunteer who serves as a lector during the Mass, encountered St. Josemaría in college.
“When I learned that the relic of St Josemaria was brought to our shrine, I simply couldn’t describe how I felt,” she said. “God indeed works in wonderful ways.”
The arrival, she said, has renewed her devotion to the saint, and she hopes to share that devotion with fellow volunteers.
Ellen, another volunteer, said she was “overjoyed” that the shrine had been chosen as the home of St. Josemaría’s relic in Cebu.
She described the arrival as a blessing and said she wanted to learn more about the saint and help spread devotion to him.
A saint for Cebu
The relic rests in a shrine dedicated to St. Joseph, whose life embodies the message St. Josemaría preached: holiness in a hidden life of work, family responsibility, faith and love.
Christians do not have to leave ordinary life to find God because they can encounter Him at home, at work, in school, in service and in the little things nobody notices.
Visitors to the National Shrine of St Joseph now have a tangible reminder of that message. A saint has come to the Visayas, and his message is remarkably close to home: Your ordinary life can become something extraordinary when it is lived with love.
