As a public school educator on the front lines of youth development, the daily grind can sometimes feel like an uphill battle against shifting social landscapes and rapid digital transformations. It was against this backdrop that I recently traveled with my teacher colleagues to the serene, mountain landscapes of the Epic Parc in Tanay, Rizal for the CACHET Technical Working Group (TWG) Campout on May 22-24. Under the resonant theme, “ReConnect, ReChange, ReCharge, ReStart,” what I expected to be a routine strategic seminar turned into a deeply moving sanctuary for reflection, personal renewal, and family reunion.
The depth of the campout became clear right from Day 1. Ms. Marievic Maala, the primary organizer and main pillar of our implementation sector, warmly welcomed us, telling everyone that this weekend wasn't a rigid corporate planning session, but an opportunity to breathe and reconnect as one supportive family. Following this, Dr. Antonio Torralba, CACHET’s program director, set a powerful tone during our initial orientation and output presentation, challenging us to build a Technical Working Group deeply grounded in a spirit of belongingness and service.
Strategic Planning for the New Academic Year
As we dove into the program, the primary objective of this particular campout became clear: to deliberately prepare, align, and equip our team for the upcoming academic year 2026-2027. With the new school year on the horizon, the sessions focused on our upcoming calendar of activities, improving operational efficiency and effectiveness, and strengthening the mentoring framework rooted in genuine care of mentees. We established standardized training and robust monitoring tools designed for the integration of student mentoring into the public school system.
We also engaged in crucial discussions regarding the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in education, beautifully balanced with spiritual formation, team building, and wellness exercises designed to keep our minds and bodies refreshed.
Living the Mission-Vision of APB and CACHET
Immersing myself in these planning sessions allowed me to deeply reflect on the broader mission-vision of CACHET that we are tasked to champion. CACHET is an acronym for Campaign for Character Education Tenacity. It is the flagship program of the Alalay sa Pamilya at Bayan (APB) Foundation, Inc. to empower public school communities—elevating youth, parents, and teachers alike through comprehensive character formation. The foundation aims to lead individuals to become God-fearing, productive, responsible, and self-reliant members of society.
Through CACHET, this mission translates into directly helping public school youth navigate critical, foundational areas of life, such as home and family life, studies and career, friendships and social responsibility, and love and courtship.
This life-changing work was born from the pioneering vision of Mrs. Annabelle Pizarro Brown, who founded the APB Foundation out of a deep desire to bring structured character education and personal development into the heart of Philippine communities. She recognized that public school students often face immense socio-cultural vulnerabilities, and vigorously promoted CACHET as an anchor to revive high moral values among Filipino families. Her relentless dedication has borne unbelievable fruit: the campaign has actively participated in socio-cultural, moral, and leadership development that now impacts close to 500 public schools, with 170 active CACHET Clubs nationwide.
The Power of Institutional Alliances
This extensive reach is reinforced by the essential endorsement and active partnership of the Department of Education (DepEd), which enables us to bring character formation directly into the formal school system. The program involves the whole school community, headed by a Focal Coach alongside the CACHET club student officers, the CACHET teacher coaches, and the values education moderators.
Concurrently, the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) serves as an indispensable co-partner, providing the critical academic guidance, frameworks, and institutional steering through the profound leadership of academic fellows like Dr. Antonio Torralba. The Bloomberry Cultural Foundation, Inc. is a valuable funding partner.
Returning to Our Family Roots
The most unforgettable and the soul-stirring highlight of our weekend was a special visit to the nearby residence of Dr. Walter Brown and Mrs. Annabelle Pizarro Brown. Gathering in their home to honor them felt less like an official meeting and more like children returning to their grandparents' roots. Standing in their living room, our entire TWG collectively sang the debut of the official CACHET jingle.
Seeing the warmth and humility of the Browns reminded all of us of the deeply personal, family-oriented foundation upon which this entire movement was built. While Mrs. Annabelle Brown provided the spark of light that birthed the foundation, Dr. Walter Brown’s unwavering commitment as our institutional patron has provided the enduring support needed to give this dream its wings.
A Culmination of Gratitude and Renewal
By Day 3, after a refreshing fellowship by the Adelaida Subdivision Swimming Pool, we gathered for a formal closing program where certificates and special talent awards were distributed. When we finally left Tanay, I packed my bags carrying far more than just operational frameworks. Thanks to DepEd, UA&P, and the enduring legacy of the Browns, I returned to my school division fully prepared for the coming school year, with an overflowing heart, clearer goals, and a completely rekindled passion to guide the next generation.
