November and December are the holiday months for many primary and secondary students in Kenya. Keeping the young ones constructively occupied in this long break is a challenge to many a parent. “I really needed this,” was the comment of one priest at the end of the week. Like many priests busy with their pastoral work, he knew how to give spiritual strength to others but was getting very little himself. One of the Christians in his parish heard about a seminar being organised for diocesan priests and paid for him to attend.

“Either I’ll turn to crime or I’ll die”

Holding his grandmother’s hands in his and looking her in straight in the eye, with an effort Harouna Gabra uttered these words to explain why he had decided to go away from Togo: “Either I’ll turn to crime or I’ll die”. He was 14 years old and could be sure of only one thing, that life had to be better outside Africa. In Togo the horizon for young people stopped at the desert where life faded gradually away and where violence and crime were the only options.
