Original sin can sound like an unfair idea: are we really being punished for something Adam and Eve did thousands of years ago, and does it mean we’re all born bad people? Well, no, that’s not what the Church teaches. Original sin is really about a gift that was lost, that God never stops trying to give back to us.

The commandment “you shall not kill” is an invitation to treasure life as a gift. It goes beyond not causing physical harm, to loving and respecting every human life from its very beginning to its natural end.

The Old Testament presents the fourth commandment as follows: “Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you” (Ex 20:12). It is a commandment that includes a promise from God: the promise to favour the child who loves his parents.

When Moses asked God his name, the reply was at once mysterious and profound: “I am who am.” It means God doesn’t just exist; He is Existence itself. And if that’s true, then the qualities we find in everything that exists can tell us something about Him.
