Msgr. José Andrés Carvajal (Murcia, Spain, 1970) studied law in Valencia and Alicante, where he earned his degree in 1993. In 1994, he moved to Rome to pursue theological studies at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, where he obtained a doctorate in Canon Law in 2003. He was ordained a priest in Rome in 1999.
He worked at the central headquarters of Opus Dei for several years, serving, among other roles, as judicial vicar and chancellor. From the year 2010, he worked closely with Bishop Javier Echevarría, accompanying him on pastoral trips until his death in 2016.
In 2017, he moved to Ecuador, where he served as regional vicar, and later as delegate for the region of Colombia and Ecuador. He carried out extensive pastoral work as chaplain in various educational institutions. He also served as a consultant to the Episcopal Commission for Doctrine within the Ecuadorian Bishops’ Conference (2017–2021) and as an advisor to the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Quito (2021–2023).
From June 2023 to April 2025 (when he was appointed Central Secretary Vicar), he was vicar of the Prelature of Opus Dei in the delegation of Madrid East.
