A Multimedia Page on Montse Grases

Montse Grases was born in Barcelona on 10 July 1941. She died young, just shy of eighteen, with dreams still unfulfilled and much of life still ahead of her. Yet she died happy, having lived a life rich in God's presence. In 2016, Pope Francis declared her venerable.

Montse Grases was a teenager from Barcelona who died just a few months short of her eighteenth birthday. Declared venerable by Pope Francis in 2016 and held up by the Synod of Bishops as a witness for today's young people, her tomb at the Oratory of Santa María de Bonaigua in Barcelona draws visitors from around the world. Now the oratory's website has launched a dedicated multimedia section — videos, audio recordings, photographs and graphics — where anyone can explore her life and the remarkable effect she continues to have on others.

These are just a few of the stories shared by young men and women from around the world whose lives have been touched, and in some cases transformed, by her story:

  • "She taught me how wonderful ordinary life can be."
  • "I told her: Montse, you know all about praying on your knees... You have to get me out of this!"
  • "I realised that holiness isn't just for grown-ups."
  • "Montse answered my prayer: my niece completely changed course from what the doctors had predicted"

The material is arranged into four chapters: Montse's childhood (her family, her school years and summer holidays); her adolescence, as she deepened her personal relationship with God and grew into herself; her illness, which became, against all expectation, an occasion for joyful and generous self-giving to God and to those around her; and finally, her legacy in the lives she has continued to shape long after her death.

Her illness became, against all expectation, an occasion for joyful and generous self-giving to God and to those around her

This last section includes a timeline of her life, testimonies from young people, a virtual visitors' book, and a map of the places most closely associated with her.

Montse Grases would have answered that call with an unhesitating yes — the call that Pope Francis put to young people in the words of the Gospel:

“‘Rabbi […] where are you staying?’ ‘Come and see’ (Jn 1:38). Jesus turns that same gaze on you,” Pope Francis wrote, “and calls you to come to Him. Have you noticed that look, dear young people? Have you heard that voice? Have you felt that pull to set out?” (Letter to young people).

Her story speaks directly to our times, which is why the Youth Synod committee proposed her as one of its models of Christian life. Visit the new multimedia feature on Montse Grases to learn more.
