Novena for Serenity to Blessed Alvaro

A novena to ask God for serenity and peace of heart through the intercession of Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, who died on 23 March 1994.

This Novena was prepared by Fr Francisco Faus in Brazil and then translated into English. We ask God to grant us serenity and peace of heart in difficult situations or times of trial, through the intercession of Blessed Alvaro.

A novena is a prayer repeated for nine consecutive days to ask God for answers to a specific request, struggle, or prayer. The novena prayer is repeated each day and can be accompanied by reading and reflection. Novenas can be offered throughout the year and are often prayed in preparation for a feast day of the Church.

WHAT IS A NOVENA?

A novena is a private (or public) prayer repeated for nine consecutive days to ask God for answers to a specific request, struggle, or prayer. The novena prayer is repeated each day and can be accompanied by reading and reflection. Novenas can be offered throughout the year and are often prayed in preparation for a feast day of the Church.

THIS NOVENA FOR SERENITY

This Novena to obtain peace of heart has texts for nine days’ prayer, asking Blessed Alvaro to intercede before God to obtain for us serenity and peace of heart in difficult situations or times of trial.

HOW TO PRAY THE NOVENA FOR SERENITY:

  • Choose a date and time (e.g., the end of day, after dinner) to start the novena.
  • Read the Texts for the Meditation of the Day slowly and meditate on them. Ask God for light and inspiration. You may want to do this in front of a crucifix.
  • Say the Prayer of the Day.
  • End with reciting the Prayer to Blessed Alvaro (on the back cover) and ask God for your specific request(s).

O God, merciful Father, you granted your bishop Blessed Alvaro, the grace of being, with our Lady's help, an exemplary pastor in the service of the Church and a most faithful son and successor of Saint Josemaría, the Founder of Opus Dei. Grant that I also may respond faithfully to the demands of the Christian vocation, turning all the circumstances and events of my life into opportunities to love you and to serve the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Deign to grant the canonization of Blessed Alvaro, and through his intercession grant me the favour I request… (here make your petition). Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father.

With ecclesiastical approval.
