Self-Leadership Tutorial Program in Soweto

Since 2014 Komati Foundation (link: komati.org ) has been running a Self-Leadership Tutorial program at Protea Glen Secondary School, Soweto.

Some learners and tutors of the program

The aim of the program is to equip learners with self-leadership and academic skills so that they can pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Since 2019 the program has been expanded to include the teaching of accounting.

The program has been structured so that learners from Grade 9 to Grade 12 are supported. The interventions at each Grade are of a different nature. The emphasis of the Program at Grade 9 is to create excitement about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in order to encourage learners to study Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Grade 10. In Grade 10 the focus is to build the right foundations for future careers by focussing mainly on creating a solid knowledge base in Mathematics as well as a good work ethic. At Grade 11 level more focus is placed on the Physical Sciences and on hands-on experiments, as well as giving guidance on university and college entrance requirements. Grade 12 learners are supported through a mentoring program to help them achieve good matric results.

The tutors running the programme are students from Wits University. Several of the tutors are ex-students from Protea Glen who went through the program recently and are now happy to give back to their community. The tutors are trained to provide effective behavioral and cognitive support to the learners. They also spend time mentoring the students on how to take responsibility for their own learning.
