A Faithful Priest: Msgr. Albert Pampillón

Monsignor Albert Pampillón, former Pro-Chancellor of Strathmore University and former Vicar of Opus Dei in East Africa passed away on Sunday 13th October in Pamplona, Spain after a long struggle with cancer, cheerfully and heroically borne.

He was born in 1952 in Spain and joined Opus Dei while studying Medicine in Madrid. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1975. Later he moved to Rome, Italy, where he pursued further studies obtaining a masters and a doctorate in Canon Law in 1978. He was ordained a priest later the same year.

In 1985 he moved to Kenya, where he became citizen and worked as a chaplain of Egerton University (Laikipia Campus), Kianda School, Kibondeni College, Strathmore Residence, Strathmore University and the Family Life Association of Kenya (FLACK). He carried out intense priestly work at Tigoni Study Centre and Jahazi Study Centre where he preached numerous retreats and taught Theology in various seminars.

In 2001 the Bishop Prelate of Opus Dei appointed him Regional Vicar of Kenya and in 2002 Blessed Pope John Paul II appointed him Chaplain to His Holiness.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and had to undergo several difficult operations. He worked as the Regional Vicar up to 2011 when his health began to fail.

He will be buried in Spain. There will be a requiem mass in Nairobi. Details will be announced soon.

He is remembered by all whom he touched spiritually. May his soul rest in peace.
