Chronology of the Cause of Canonization of Bishop Alvaro del Portillo

Bishop Javier Echevarría spoke these words in Rome on August 7 as the tribunal of the Prelature of Opus Dei closed the introductory phase of the Cause of Canonization for Bishop Álvaro del Portillo, first successor of St. Josemaría.

In 1975, Alvaro del Portillo succeeded St. Josemaría Escrivá as head of Opus Dei, carrying on his work with fidelity and dedication.

On July 5, 2013, Pope Francis signed the decree recognizing the miracle attributed to the intercession of Alvaro del Portillo, which opens the way to his beatification.

The inaugural session of the tribunal of the prelature of Opus Dei which will conduct the informative stage of the cause of canonization of Msgr. Alvaro del Portillo took place on March 20. The ceremony was held in the Hoffner Hall of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, with some four hundred persons attending.
