There are many states of awe.
At one extreme is shock and on the other beauty. But the kind of awe that Pope Francis is sowing is drenched in authenticity. His trademark will clearly be awe with a daily admixture of surprise. Just how does he do it?
The latest surprise? Francis will celebrate Holy Thursday Mass in a juvenile-detention centre not far from the Vatican. During the ceremony he will wash the feet of some of the young prisoners as a way of commemorating a solemn moment during the Last Supper when Jesus washed the feet of the apostles.
From Day 1 he has been captivating the world with one simple, awesome gesture after another. During those first moments of greeting the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s, the Pope bowed his head and asked for people to pray for him.
