Forty Years of “Romana”

The 81st issue, from June-December 2025, marks the 40th anniversary of “Romana.” The official bulletin of the Prelature of Opus Dei was published for the first time in 1986, reporting on the year 1985.

This issue’s editorial, titled “From Oxford to Harvard,” reflects on the university’s mission as a place for seeking and communicating truth, and weaves together two pieces of news from the semester: the declaration of Saint John Henry Newman (a figure inseparable from Oxtford) as a Doctor of the Church and the opening of the canonisation cause of Ruth Pakaluk, a supernumerary of Opus Dei who found her faith at Harvard.

The Holy See section includes six documents from Pope Leo XIV and one document from the Roman Curia. Among the Prelate’s texts, Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz preached two meditations in the prelatic church in Rome (one on the commemoration of the faithful departed and another on the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception) and a homily in the parish of San Giovanni Battista al Collatino, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Centro Elis. Also included is a talk on the virtue of hope addressed to a group of members of the Prelature.

Among the news related to Saint Josemaría are the presentation of the hundredth edition of The Way at the National Library of Madrid; the placement of his images in the Basilica of the Pilar (Zaragoza), in the Cathedral of Riga (Latvia) and in a parish in Concepción (Chile); and the celebration of Founder’s Week at the Panamerican University (Mexico), an academic forum for reflection on his figure and legacy.

The diaconal ordination of 18 members of Opus Dei was an institutional milestone this semester, along with the 50th anniversary of the Shrine of Torreciudad (Spain); and the nihil obstat of the Holy See allowing for to opening of the beatification cause of Ruth Pakaluk (1957-1998), an American supernumerary.

This issue also highlights the BeDoCare 2025 gathering at Strathmore University (Nairobi, Kenya), an educational project for immigrant women in Seville (Spain), and assistance to those affected by the Cebu earthquake (Philippines).

The issue closes with a study by Miguel Ángel Monge Sánchez, chaplain of the University of Navarre Clinic between 1982 and 2010, on accompanying and caring for the sick.

Romana is the official bulletin of the Prelature of Opus Dei. It is published twice a year in English, Spanish, and Italian, and includes documents, speeches and news from the Pope, the Prelate and the life of the institution worldwide. Each issue is also an archive; a first-hand source for anyone who wishes to follow the Church and Opus Dei closely.
