Romana 78: January - June 2024

"Romana," the official bulletin of the Prelature of Opus Dei, is now available online in English for the first 6 months of 2024.

Romana, the official bulletin of the Prelature of Opus Dei, is now available online in English for the first 6 months of 2024.

The editorial for this issue of Romana is entitled Drawing Near to the Holy Door: Conversion and Mercy. It offers reflections on the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025 convoked by Pope Francis in the Bull Spes Non Confundit, also included in this issue.

The Prelate section offers the long pastoral letter the Prelate of Opus sent in February 2024 on the virtue of obedience according to the model Christ left us and taking into account the current context. This section also includes two homilies of the Prelate: one given at the Mass of Blessed Alvaro del Portillo in Rome in May, and the other at the Mass for the Feast of Saint Josemaria in June. An interview with the Prelate published in June in the Madrid newspaper El Debate is also offered for the first time in an English translation. Another interesting article included here is the transcription of the talk he gave in Rome in January on “Availability and Celibacy in Opus Dei,” in which he develops at length the theological underpinnings of this virtue, and its close tie to a “paternity without limits.”

On June 24 Monsignor Ocáriz was received in audience by Pope Francis. Five days later, on his way to Spain, he stopped in Milan to meet with a large group of families from the city who take part directly or indirectly in the formative activities of Opus Dei.

The Study in this issue of Romana deals with a central theme in the teachings of St. Josemaría and is entitled Pluralism, Civic Friendship and the Defense of One’s Own Identity. Its author is Andrés Irarrázaval, from the University of Los Andes (Santiago de Chile).
