400 Years of the Basilica of Saint Peter

Located in the heart of Vatican City and built by Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini, Saint Peter's Basilica is the centre of Christianity and one of the crowning achievements of the Renaissance. The Holy See has recently held several events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of its dedication.

Throughout two thousand years of history, the Church has preserved the apostolic succession. And among the Apostles, Christ himself made Simon the object of a special choice: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church." Peter moved to Rome and established there the seat of the primacy, of the Vicar of Christ.
