Opus Dei

Despite forecasts of heavy snow, nearly 400 people attended the Centennial Conference on the teachings of St Josemaría Escrivá at Bentley College near Boston recently.

Within the beautiful setting of the mountains of West Vancouver, BC, at the Hollyburn Country Club, Headford Cultural Group presented its first conference on the influence of Blessed Josemaria on professional life, family and education.

From January 9, 2002 to January 9, 2003, various events took place to commemorate the centennial year of St. Josemaría’s birth. A summary of the events of the year follows.

A symposium in Chicago on June 28 brought together a group of theologians, philosophers, and other scholars to discuss aspects of the Founder of Opus Dei’s teaching.

A standing room only crowd turned out on January 14, 2003, for a lecture by Rev. George Rutler entitled, “Reflections on the canonization of the Founder of Opus Dei.”

Pope John Paul's Message for the 18th World Youth Day, to be celebrated in dioceses throughout the world on Palm Sunday 2003, was published today. The Pope noted that the theme he chose, "Behold your Mother!" is linked to the Year of the Rosary which he proclaimed on October 16, 2002.

An account given by Russian poet Aleksandr Ivanovich Zorin, an Orthodox Christian who discovered in “The Way” the secret for finding God “here, sitting in front of my desk.”

Romana, the official journal of the prelature of Opus Dei, has launched a new website: www.romana.org.

An article on St. Josemaría from the Denver Catholic Register follows. A Mass of Thanksgiving for the canonization of the new saint drew 350 to the Denver Cathedral last month.

During a ceremony in which she was given an honorary doctorate by the University of Navarre, a Spanish university inspired by St. Josemaría, Mary Ann Glendon spoke on the importance of education in the task of transforming culture. Her address follows.
