To be Catholic is to play in the World Cup every day!

Leonardo Agustina is one of the priests that were recently ordained in Rome. He was then working as a journalist and now is eager to spread the most transcendental truth of all times: the life of Jesus Christ.

Q: You studied journalism in the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Will your previous studies help you in this new phase of your life as a priest?

Certainly. The ideals that I had as a journalist have become radically transformed and are still very much alive. I cannot wait to spread the most transcendental truth of all times: the life of Jesus Christ.

Let me explain: now I will be working for a broadcast agency with 2000 years of history and which will exist until the end of Judgment day, when finally journalists of that moment can close their transmission with a “this is it, we have come to the end of the program…”

Q: If you have to summarize the Christian message in one phrase, what would it be?

Smile, God is filming you.

Q: You have a doctorate in Moral Theology, with a thesis about how Bioethics is presented in the media. What were your conclusions?

I came across three types of responses to current bioethical problems that are based largely on emotion, liberalism or a utilitarian outlook. These have made me to see that there are persons who are eager to defend an ideal, and that God is compatible with this ideal. In fact, none of these current thoughts, even though they are partially valid, can exhaust the truths about man.

I remember a classmate who told me that when he was small, one of his friends died and since then, on his death anniversary, he would go to church to pray for him. And I wondered: Why only on that day? At times we seek God, but only half-heartedly, with reservations, as if too much of God could be a nuisance. The Christian message is so beautiful that it seems unreal: it makes your head spin!

Q: Does God continue to be news today, even in the 21st century?

To the agnostics who may ask, I would tell them with the words of Benedict XVI, that if they are ready to take a risk, they should begin with this question: And if God does exist?

Many people approach the afterlife like a penalty kick: if I score a goal, fine, and if not…. Sincerely, I do not want to approach life just so as to arrive at 0-0. I think that it is much more appealing to try to win, taking the risks that come with it. Besides, we Catholics always play on home ground, in which case, we have the Referee on our side, and in an emergency, he will grant us the penalty kick. To be a Catholic is to play soccer in the World Cup every day!
