Compilation of Escriva miracles is now available

Josephine Darang writes about a new book in her column “Purely Personal” in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Monina Allarey Mercado, ed., with Shirley Sangalang.

“GOD Provides” is a compilation of stories of miracles wrought by God through the intercession of Blessed Josemaria Escriva, before his canonization on Oct. 6, 2002.

Divided into 12 categories, the stories of miracles tell us how, through prayer and faith, people were helped by the mercy of God. The categories are Prayer, Conversions, Confession, Work, Ordinary Life, Friends, Marriage and Family, Children, Student Life, Safety, Cures and Illness and Death. Edited by Monina Allarey Mercado, the stories were gathered by an editorial team composed of Merle Basco, Vicki Elizaga, Nenita Escasa, Christine Gomez, Lita Hidalgo and Eileen Yordan. Violeta Laraya was assistant to the editor while Jimmy Hilario did the cover design.

As I read, I found myself praying for the conversion of a friend, for the healing of a sick person and for someone to pass the bar exams.

Monina Allarey Mercado with Daryl Jose, 10, who has received many favors through St. Josemaria. Daryl has given prayer cards to all his classmates.

One story that amazed me was the healing of Shirley Sangalang’s right ear.

Sangalang developed an infection in her right ear after she accidentally sprayed it with perfume. Pus came out of it and her entire eardrum disappeared, eaten away by the infection. She suffered great pain for three years. Her doctor, Eric Nubla, suggested surgery. She agreed after Dr. Nubla promised to pray to Blessed Escriva for her cure. In his prayer, Dr. Nubla challenged Escriva to heal Shirley’s ear, if he was truly a saint.

Two weeks later, before the surgery could be performed, Sangalang went to the doctor for a checkup. To the doctor’s amazement, Shirley’s ear was healthy and the eardrum intact.

In a testimony, Dr. Nubla wrote: “I felt so humbled. An interior conviction assured me that it was Msgr. Escriva’s intercession that obtained Shirley’s cure, and also not just for her benefit, but also to win my heart.”
