We grew up in Ontario, Canada, so the Muggeridge name is not so well known here. But my father has a lot of memories of his grandfather Malcolm and summers spent at his home in Sussex, in the south of England.
Malcolm Muggeridge was a lifelong seeker after truth. This quest led him from communism to Christianity. He was a journalist, writer and apologist, and an important English thinker in the second half of the 20th century. Although I did not know him, my great-grandfather has been a strong influence in the history of my family, also in the way we live and understand the faith.
I was baptized as a child and have always lived in a Catholic environment. By contrast, my great-grandfather, Malcolm, and his wife, Kitty, had a long journey to the faith. They were received in the Catholic Church at almost 80 years of age, thanks in part to their friendship with Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
I see my great-grandfather as a man who, once he discovered the truth, gave his life to it completely. This is something I aspire to imitate. In my vocation as an assistant numerary in Opus Dei, I have encountered a life of happiness and fulfilment, knowing that through my professional work, people feel loved and valued and this brings them closer to the truth, closer to God.
