Alvaro del Portillo: Audio Drama Series

May 12 is the feast day of Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, the successor to the founder of Opus Dei. Here is a radio drama series on the life of Alvaro, produced by The Merry Beggars at Relevant Radio.

The five-part series follows Alvaro’s arduous efforts in Rome to obtain Vatican approval for Opus Dei, his work at the Second Vatican Council, and his assumption of the leadership of Opus Dei after the passing of Saint Josemaria.

The story unfolds against the backdrop of historical events, including World War II and the Second Vatican Council.

The episodes are available to download for free on the major podcast platforms (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.) and on The Merry Beggars’ website here.

The Merry Beggars is the entertainment division of Chicago-based Relevant Radio, the Catholic radio network. The Alvaro series is part of their program The Saints, which dramatizes the lives of Catholic saints and blesseds. Other series include Joan of Arc, Patrick of Ireland, Thomas More and Josephine Bakhita.

"We were thrilled and honored to bring Don Alvaro's story to life in audio," said Kevin Collins, Creative Producer for The Merry Beggars. "Alvaro's life is a powerful witness of humility and trust in Jesus. Despite the many setbacks and challenges he faced, he remained an example of faith, hope and Christian charity."

Kiley Hatch, a graduate of The Oakcrest School in Vienna, Virginia, wrote the script for the Alvaro del Portillo series. She also authored the Relevant Radio audio drama series on Saint Josemaria Escriva.
