Hymns

Ubi caritas

Where there is charity and love, God is also there. The love of Christ has brought us together. Let us rejoice and take delight in Him: let us fear and love the living God; let us love one another with a sincere heart.

Where there is charity and love, God is also there. Therefore, when we gather together as one: lest we be divided in purpose, let us beware. Let spiteful quarrels and arguments cease, and may Christ our God be in our midst.

Where there is charity and love, God is also there. Together in glory with the blessed, may we see your face, Christ our God, happiness of immeasurable excellence through unending ages of ages.

Pax in caelo

Peace in heaven, peace on earth, peace in every nation, peace to the priests of God’s church.

Christ Jesus is the King of Peace, and forever will his dominion be established, He Himself is our peace.

Peace in heaven, peace on earth.

May justice and abundant peace arise in our days.

Peace in every nation.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.

Peace to the priests of God’s church.

Rorate coeli

In Advent

Send the Just One like a dew, you heavens, and let the clouds rain Him down. Be not angry, Lord, remember no longer our iniquity:

Behold, your holy city has been abandoned: Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem made desolate: your holy and glorious dwelling, where our fathers praised You.

Send the Just One like a dew, you heavens, and let the clouds rain Him down.

We have sinned, we have become unclean, we have all fallen like leaves and our iniquities have carried us away like the wind: You have hidden your face from us and You have let us suffer in the hand of our iniquity.

Send the Just One like a dew, you heavens, and let the clouds rain Him down.

See, Lord, the affliction of your people, and send He whom You are going to send: the Lamb, the Ruler of the earth, from the rock of the desert to the mountain of the daughter of Sion that He might take up the yoke of our captivity.

Send the Just One like a dew, you heavens, and let the clouds rain Him down.

Be consoled, be consoled, my people, quickly will come your salvation: why are you consumed by grief, so that your sorrow transforms you? I will save you, do not be afraid, for I am the Lord your God, your holy redeemer of Israel.

Send the Just One like a dew, you heavens, and let the clouds rain Him down.

Te, Ioseph

Let the hosts of angels sing your praises, Joseph. Let all the choirs of Christians make your name resound to honour you for your unique merits and for your union in chaste wedlock with the glorious Virgin.

Astonished at your wife being pregnant with her holy Child, with doubt and anxiety filling your soul, an angel told you that the Child was conceived by the breath of the heavenly Spirit.

You took the Lord in your arms at his birth and followed Him into exile in far-off Egypt: when He was lost, you searched Jerusalem; finding Him, your tears of sorrow became tears of joy.

After death the blessed souls enjoy the presence of God, and glory is the welcome of those who win the palm of victory: during your life, however, you enjoyed God’s presence on a par with those in heaven, yet even more blessed by this privilege.

Mighty God, three in one, spare us, your suppliants. Grant through Joseph’s merits that we enter heaven where we may then unceasingly sing in your honour our hymns of joy and gratitude. Amen.

Media vita

In Lent

In the midst of life we are in death; of whom may we seek help but You, O Lord, who for our offences are justly displeased?

Yet, O God most holy, O holy and mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, give us not over unto bitter death.

In You our fathers trusted. They trusted and You delivered them.

They cried out to You, and they were rescued. They cried out to You, and they were not disappointed.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Ave verum

Hail, true Body born of the Virgin Mary: which truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind.

Whose pierced side with Blood and water flowed: be for us a foretaste in the moment of death.

O Jesus kind! O Jesus compassionate! O Jesus, Son of Mary.

Ave maris stella

Hail, Star of the sea, gracious and ever virgin mother of God; blessed Gate of heaven.

You who received that Ave from Gabriel’s lips, establish us in peace, transforming the name of Eve.

Free sinners from their chains, bring light to the blind, drive away our ills, and ask for us every blessing.

Show yourself a mother: may He who, born for us, deigned to be your Son, through you receive our prayers.

Virgin without equal, meek above all others, make us, freed from sin, meek and chaste.

Keep our life unspotted, procure a safe journey: so that seeing Jesus we might forever rejoice together.

To God the Father be praise, to Christ most high be glory, and to the Holy Spirit; to the Three be one honour. Amen.

Song of Zechariah

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; He has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty saviour, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets He promised of old that He would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath He swore to our father Abraham:

To set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship Him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Oremus pro Pontifice

Let us pray for our Holy Father N.

May the Lord preserve him, and grant him life, and make him holy on earth, and not deliver him into the hands of his enemies.

Lux aeterna

May eternal light shine on them, Lord, with your saints forever, for You are good.

Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them, for You are good.

Vexilia Regis

To venerate the Holy Cross

The standard of the King appears, the mystery of the Cross shines forth on which Life endured death and from death brought forth life.

Life, wounded by the lance’s cruel point so as to wash us clean from the stains of sin, poured forth water and Blood.

Fulfilled were the events that David prophesied in his unerring song addressed to the nations: God has reigned from the wood.

O gleaming and beauteous tree, decked out with the royal purple, chosen from a worthy stock to touch the sacred limbs of God.

Blessed tree, on whose arms hung the ransom of the world: weighed his Body on your balance which carried off the spoils of hell.

On the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross: Hail, O Cross, our only hope: in the glory of the triumph give added grace to the faithful and forgive sinners their offences.

On Good Friday: Hail, O Cross, our only hope: in this time of Passion give added grace to the faithful and forgive sinners their offences.

May every spirit together praise You, O Trinity, spring of salvation: and to those whom You grant the victory of the Cross, give also its reward. Amen.
