Archive: Opus Dei in Australia
On Monday 27 June, a Mass was celebrated in honor of St Josemaria at St Mary's Cathedral. Despite the cold conditions, the Cathedral was full, with many young people in attendance. The principal celebrant was Bishop Peter Comensoli, Bishop of Broken Bay. Here is a transcript of his homily:
The Prelate of Opus Dei, Bishop Javier Echevarría, writes on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first women in Opus Dei in the region of Australia and New Zealand.
In March 2014, 16 intrepid young men from Sydney left their university studies and jobs on a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land. They took part in the UNIV conference – a conference organised for University students from across the world during Holy Week; and also attended the canonisations of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. The pilgrimage was organised by Warrane College and also involved students from Mirrabooka and Nairana Study Centres.
St Mary Star of the Sea, West Melbourne is considered one of Australia’s most beautiful neo-gothic churches. In 2001 the administration of St Mary's was entrusted to the priests of Opus Dei. The current Parish Priest is Fr Anthony Bernal. Assistant priests are Fr Joseph Pich, and Fr Jerry Gehringer.
