Eccellenze Reverendissime,

a nome di tutti gli universitari presenti, desidero manifestare la gratitudine e l'affetto che proviamo per il Santo Padre, che anche quest'anno ha voluto che ci incontrassimo qui, per ascoltare le parole che rivolge ai partecipanti al Congresso UNIV. Il messaggio del Santo Padre è sempre stato il momento culminante di ogni nostro incontro romano, e lo è in modo particolare quest'anno.

Proveniamo da 51 Paesi: in qualche modo, in questo momento ci sentiamo come i rappresentanti dei giovani di tutto il mondo, che si riuniscono intorno al Papa per rivivere il Mistero Pasquale. Siamo venuti per adorare Gesù, specialmente nell'Eucaristia, come ci ha esortato a fare nel Messaggio con il quale ci ha invitati a recarci a Colonia, l'estate prossima.

Nos dirigimos al Santo Padre como si estuviese, ahora, aquí, entre nosotros, porque sabemos que nos sigue de cerca - a cada uno - compartiendo nuestras aspiraciones, temores y deseos de hacer de nuestra vida algo grande. Nos proponemos llevar la alegría y la sonrisa del Papa a todos nuestros coetáneos, la misma que acabamos de ver en las imágenes de un encuentro del UNIV hace veinte años cuando muchos de nosotros éramos aún niños pequeños. Queremos ser su voz para ofrecer a los miles de amigos nuestros, en la universidad, en nuestros lugares de estudio y en todas partes, el estímulo de no tener miedo de buscar el amabilísimo rostro de Cristo.

In this year’s congress, we have reflected on the theme “Projecting Culture: the language of Music”. The reality of art is such that it continuously remits to the transcendent; the beauty of created things can never fully satisfy, it stirs the hidden nostalgia for God (Letter to Artists, n 16). Besides being an artist expression, music occupies many aspects of the lives of we young people. We would like the christian spirit to permeate and vivify all these aspects; we want to seriously undertake the task of discovering Christ in order to reflect a christian mentality in all the aspects of our existence (cfr. Ecclesia in Europa, n 62). This is what St. Josemaría whom the Pope has defined as “the saint of the ordinary” has encouraged us to embark on. John Paul II is for us a constant example and stimulus in this endeavour.

Once again, we thank you Holy Father! With a lot of affection and the assurance that we can always count on your prayers for each one of us, we ask for your paternal blessing.
